rally(ing) forces

Fri Nov 13, 2009, 7:20 PM
Tangible journal entry that I decided to reproduce. I like it.

Today I sat through a rally—already an unpleasant enough experience as it is—in front of a loud band of punks. Punks, without the good connotations of rock: the messin'-with-people-just-to-be-jerks kind of people.

There were all the signs that the seat choice wasn't the best one... It had been one of the few areas of bleacher still open (why we took it, of course), and one of the dudes had his feet up on the seat in front of him, slouching and making mean looks to people who attempted to interrupt his footrest space. Richter did, in the end, and got kneed in the back throughout. I regret, a little, putting him through that.

Said punks made—I could hardly call them snide, as that would imply some level of intelligence—comments throughout. Loudly. Sexual innuendos about the cheerleaders. Whoops for their chosen favorite jocks. Booing. Part of high school (at least as a member of the more band-tending group) is about ignoring the people who make apes of themselves.

But something struck me. B-Boy Club was up freestylin', and Adam busted his moves (if I knew anything about dancing, I'd love to better identify it). The ape punks yelled something to the effect of, "He's gay! Get off the stage!" I had just been noting, with the visual example, the way Adam dresses: awesomely tidy. But the collared shirts, sweaters, argyle, are just fodder for such idiots as the dudes sitting behind us. It's not as if anyone else was jeering at Adam; he danced skillfully. And it's not as if kids like the ones behind us even matter (especially when they say stuff like that). As a band kid, a geek, a member of the more bohemian community, you just let comments like that roll off. But this one made me so mad.

I have a whole lotta respect for Adam: ASB President, band cheerleader, Comp Civics-level nerd, argyle-toting bi guy. One of the kids who proves you don't have to be cliquey or social élitist to be popular. In other words, he is awesome.

And maybe it's that something in me automatically associates with any kid they're calling gay. I stick with the bullied rather than the bullies. (I guess that makes sense, but: ) I'm a band kid. I'm a gay rights sympathizer, an unliberated something between the occasions when I'm mistaken for male and when some elegant tough chick catches my eye. I've a boyfriend, and so whoever else I'm interested in is irrelevant at the moment. (Besides which, bi girls aren't terribly abundant, unlike the males, of which there are many respectable real-life [at my high school] examples.) And it's not like I want to make a big deal. I exist as I exist, and that's my policy.

So: Dear Adam,
I support you.
And great moves, by the way.
Sincerely, Susie

I want some advice (:

I have a college app due on Sunday, and one of the supplements calls for a written work completely of your own creation. The instructions are: "Then choose one of the five extended essay options, indicate your choice, and write a one- or two-page response. This is your chance to speak to us and our chance to listen as you tell us about yourself, your tastes, and your ambitions. Each topic can be addressed with utter seriousness, complete fancy, or something in between-it is your choice. Play, analyze (don't agonize), create, compose-let us hear the result of your thinking about something that interests you, in a voice that is your own.
In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose a question of your own. If your prompt is original and thoughtful, then you should have little trouble writing a great essay. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, social critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of this college; take a little risk and have fun."

So I'm thinking it would be way more fun to be completely original and use one of my pieces from dA. You read all of my stuff and write yourself, so I was wondering if you could perhaps give some insight as to which you think is better suited for this type of thing?

Option 1: [link]
The question I would be answering in this would be something along the lines of, write a letter to someone whom you love.

Option 2:
[link]
Question: Describe your imaginary friend.

If you have time to look at this... I'd appreciate it (:

If something is uncomfortable to think about, it probably means that you should think about it.

Well, first of all, you are DEFINITELY applying to an awesome college because I have never seen a prompt like that before. And it is so cool! :D
So, yeah, dA work makes perfect sense. (:
Anyway, my opinion...
I think you should go with Option 1. I personally believe it says more about you, gives more specific things that the school can learn about you, in vivid little bites. On top of that, the piece is one of my favorites of yours... and it's a little more, I dunno... hopeful? It's a subject matter (love) that for some reason people like to hear about a lot and something people can connect to.
So, there's my advice. Best of luck with apps, and smart choice, again, for applying to such a unique school :P

Hehe, you're welcome.
Nice! They sent me a bunch of pamphlets and seemed like a cool school (the pamphlets were really nicely done... lol).
